BATUKU

Kauberdianu Danbará (1964-Felisberto Vieira Lopes)

Nha fla-m, Nha Dunda, kusé k'é batuku?
Nha nxina mininu kusa k'é ka sabe.

Nha fidju, batuku N ka se kusa.
Nu nase nu atxa-l.
Nu ta more nu ta dexa-l.
E lonji sima séu,

E usu-l téra, sabi nos genti.

Mosas na terreru

Nteradu dúzia dúzia na labada,

Aima é forsa di batuku.
Na batupériu-l fomi,

Kenha ki kre-nu, kre batuku.

- Kaoberdiano Dambara (1964-Felisberto Vieira Lopes)

BATUKU (transl.)

Tell me, Nha Dunda, what is Batuku?
Teach the children what they don't know.

My children, I don't know what butuku is.
We were born and we found it here.
We will die and we will leave it here.
It's off in the distance like the sky.
It's deep as the ocean,
hard as rock.
It is the ways of the land,
And it feels so fine, let me tell you.

Young girls on the dancing floor
with their hips ready to dance
under the clapping of txabeta*
the body ready to die,
but I won't die.
The soul is calling me
to dance batuku.

There were dozens and dozens of people
buried in a common grave.
Hundreds and hundreds of people buried in a shroud of stone in the disaster
of the Assistencia.**
Thousands and thousands of Cape Verdeans
forced to labor in Sao Tome,
some were burned in the lava of the volcano.
The body dies but the spirit stays.
The soul is the strength of the batuku,
in the time famine,
in the sharing of excitement,
in the longing for the son gone away,
batuku is our soul.
Feel it, my children,
Those who love us, love batuku.
Batuku is our soul!

--- Kaoberdiano Dambara (translation by Manuel DaLuz Goncalves)

Notes:
* Txabeta (tchabeta) refers to the rapid, synchronized hand clapping with open palms against cushions held tightly between the knees while someone dances the batuku.

** "Assistencia" was the popular name of the colonial government's soup kitchen and welfare building in Praia. The walls of the building were made of round boulders gathered on the beach and held together with very little cement. One day in the 1940s the building collapsed, crushing hundreds of people. The incident is a metaphor for colonial neglect in Cape Verde.

Agnelo A. Montrond

“… a bizarre practice in Cape Verde of addressing government officials as “doctors” when in fact these lack the academic, honorary or any right to the title of Doctor …”, Miguel Vieira.

Esta é a minha reacção ao artigo “Dr. or not Dr?

Agnelo A. Montrond

Sabedoria popular ta fla na Kriolu: “Kuza sabi ta kaba faxi. E ta kumedu divagar”. Pur isu, nu ta rikumenda tudu algen pa adkiri un izenplar y le-l divagar, sen presa.

Si algen pergunta Dany modi ki ta skrebedu un romansi, ó modi ki el ta inspira pa skrebe puezias, N sabi ma se rispósta ta ser ó un livru ó un puezia riba di kes ki dja-l tene publikadu sima: “Lágrimas de Bronze”, ficção, EA, Praia – 1991 (3ª edição – 2006); “Na Kantar di Sol”, poesia, EA, Praia – 1991; “Adon y Eva”, poemas, ICLD, Praia – 1999; “Infinito Delírio”, poemas, IBNL, Praia – 2002; “Evocações”, ensaios, IBNL, Praia – 2004; “Vagens de Sol”, poemas, IBNL – 2005; “Lagoa Gemia”, contos em crioulo, Spleen-edições

Has “not Dr. ” Vieira Been Influenced By MPD To Do This Show? That Is The Question!

Agnelo A. Montrond

“… a bizarre practice in Cape Verde of addressing government officials as “doctors” when in fact these lack the academic, honorary or any right to the title of Doctor …”, Miguel Vieira.

Herein is my formal reaction to the article “Dr. or not Dr? That is the question”, written by Miguel Vieira, FORCV columnist, which is still posted on FORCV.COM.

Columnist Miguel Vieira was quite unfortunate (and perhaps negatively influenced) to have chosen such a superfluous subject. In fact his text is emptied of content and constitutes an attack on all Cape Verdeans residing in the islands, who hold either a bachelor’s or a master’s degree. Mr. Vieira was even more unfortunate when he mistakenly inspired on the American educational and cultural system to undertake such a pessimistic, displaced, and imprudent reflection and analysis of the titles associated to the academic degrees of our current government members.

And now I ask: why only now, is Mr. Vieira coming with these disparaging topics to politely insult the PAICV government? And why aren’t contemplated the former MPD government members, neither the recently elected mayors of the municipalities ruled by MPD, nor the members of the Cape Verdean parliament, or the Cape Verdean politicians in general, etc., in this analysis? This is like the Original and deadly sin committed by Miguel Vieira. Does it signify that FORCV is being used for doing campaign against PAICV? Has Mr. Vieira been influenced by MPD to do this show?

This practice of using titles of Dr. and Eng. to indicate respect to all those who earned a college or university degree does not happen exclusively in Cape Verde, but in all the Portuguese speaking countries, including Portugal. In spite of what Mr. Vieira thinks, in Cape Verde, the title Dr. does not necessary mean PhD, or another equivalent academic degree in the American system. If he didn’t know, he has created his own opportunity to learn it now. It has always been so, both in Cape Verde and in Portugal, as well as in other Portuguese speaking countries. A more pedagogic and careful criticism, without outraging our current government officials, would have done a better job, especially at this time where one of our government’s endeavors is developing our higher educational system. Hence, we are aware that whomever is concerned, especially the Cape Verdean Scholars, will deal appropriately with this issue.

Why didn’t the columnist target the Portuguese, Angolan, or any other government members? The answer is very simple: because he wants to get involved in petty politics. Please, do not even try to convince anybody that it is not a preconceived strategy aimed at mocking and disparaging the PAICV government members.

And the columnist decides to write this whole text solely in English and not in Portuguese or in Creole of Cape Verde. If the subject concerns the Cape Verdeans living on the archipelago, whose majority does not understand English, it is even more than an insult to address them in English. I suggest that this text be interpreted and published in Portuguese and / or in Cape Verdean Creole.

As if that was not enough, Mr. Vieira goes even further and attacks the whole class of the Cape Verdean journalists using insulting adjectives and predicates when he attributes them the practice of “journalistic dishonesty; lack of journalistic accuracy; infantile practice; disingenuous vanity and flattery by massaging the ego of the Cape Verdean government members by calling them Doctors, who pretend that they are truthful bearers of the title of doctor.” And he adds more to his plate when referring to this practice as being a pathetic example of a disillusionment of grandeur. What a tremendous irresponsibility is such a negative contribution dealing with titles and labels? It is a pity not to have chosen another subject instead of this washing of dirty clothes in a public arena.

Cape Verdean Creole Linguistic Creed

Benjamin F. Elson, September, 1987

We believe that language is one of God's most important gifts to man, and of all human characteristics, language is the most distinctly human and the most basic. Without language, culture and civilization would be impossible.

We also believe that any language is capable of being a vehicle for complicated human interaction and complex thought, and can be the basis for a complex culture and civilization. Therefore, all languages deserve respect and careful study.

As the most uniquely human characteristic a person has, a person's language is associated with his self-image. Interest in and appreciation of a person's language is tantamount to interest in and appreciation of the person himself.

All languages are worthy of preservation in written form by means of grammars, dictionaries, and written texts. This should be done as part of the heritage of the human race.

Every language group deserves to see its language in print and to have some literature written in it. Minority language groups within a larger nation deserve the opportunity of learning to speak, read, and write the national language.

C. Verdeans’ Native Language Is Cape Verdean, Not Portuguese

Agnelo A. Montrond

The term Kriolu is derived from the Portuguese word Crioulo, which in turn is derived from criar meaning “to raise” and olo defined as “house - a typical African house in the Portuguese African colonies.”

The slaves deliberately created Kriolu as a language they could use to communicate among themselves yet not be understood by their owners. The colonizers did not want to welcome Kriolu because it would have jeopardized their absolute power to control the situation. Therefore, they tried unsuccessfully to eradicate the Cape Verdean language and their cultural identity. Even though the temptation to do so has had the opposite effect, we have to admit that some Cape Verdeans of different generations have successfully assimilated that colonizer’s mentality and consider themselves culturally superior to their own people to the extent of looking down upon their own cultural values and identity. That explains the resistance correlated to the identity crisis that some Cape Verdeans may still be facing which urgently needs to be addressed.

Inspired on what Amilcar Cabral said, “a people’s culture serves as the touchstone of their identity”, we must be prepared to understand and effectively deal with these kinds of behavior. It is due to the fact that during the colonial era, the attempt was to brainwash the people of the colony of Cape Verde. Indeed, everything was geared towards the culture of the colonizers, which was the de facto culture Cape Verdeans needed to learn and master. The curriculum in schools reflected that ill-conceived colonial policy: students were forced to learn geography, language, history and culture from the colonizers’ perspective and encouraged to ignore their own. They had to learn the names of every single river in Portugal and the history of all the kings of Portugal. In addition, they had to read texts that were impregnated with the colonizers' ideology. This tactic gave birth to a sense of inferiority and inadequacy among the people, which is still bearing a negative impact on some.

For centuries, the colonizers have promptly repressed the movement towards the decolonization of mentalities. The imposition of Portuguese as the only official language has been nothing more than a provisional atrocity, being that Cape Verdeans in the archipelago, as well as in the diasporas, have always naturally and spontaneously resisted any such attempt. Kriolu has appeared, and continues to appear, as the language that has definitely defined and shaped our culture. Portuguese has always been learned in an academic setting in school whereas life skills have been learned in Kriolu at home, in playgrounds, etc, through social interactions.

In the United States, Cape Verdeans are identified as a separate group; they are not Portuguese, but rather Cape Verdeans. Their native language is Cape Verdean, not Portuguese. The Cape Verdean language is an autonomous language with its own structure and lexicon, which reflect both its Portuguese and West African derivation. The Portuguese influence is seemingly obvious considering the lexical nature of the majority of the Cape Verdean language vocabulary. However, the West African influence seems to be ignored. In fact, the Cape Verdean and West African languages exhibit similarity and parallelism: adjectives following the noun, the use of intonation to differentiate between interrogative and declarative sentences, frequent repetition of words, African morphological structures, lack of distinction of voice, verbal adjectives, etc.

Thus far, a great deal has been accomplished with regard to this issue: a unified alphabet for the orthography of Cape Verdean Kriolu, “ALUPEK” has been approved by the Cape Verdean government; literary materials in Cape Verdean Kriolu are available online, in books, periodicals, academic texts, and in other forms. Those resources have and continue to be provided by numerous authors including, but not limited to Manuel Veiga, the author of the Introduction to the Cape Verdean Kriolu grammar book, Tomé Varela, Kaka Barbosa, Danny Spinola, and Manuel Da Luz Gonçalves. However, there is more work ahead, namely an amendment to the Cape Verdean Constitution, which declares Portuguese as not solely the official language, intended to provide Cape Verdean Kriolu with the status that it deserves and make it the other official language along with Portuguese. Nevertheless, we are not trying to reinvent the wheel when we claim, on a positive and constructive tone, that the Cape Verdean language lacks sufficient visibility in the United States. Neither do we need to be rocket scientists or geniuses to perceive that Cape Verdean Kriolu lacks recognition in Brockton, the City of Champions and home of more than 25 000 Cape Verdeans. Our leaders need to be more proactive in their joint endeavor of promoting awareness and recognition of our linguistic identity in order to demystify the imbroglio: Portuguese or Cape Verdean Kriolu, which is the native language of Cape Verdeans?

It is time to empower the natural expression of the Cape Verdean soul both in the archipelago and in the Cape Verdean communities in the diasporas. The people of Cape Verde have always expressed the need for a balanced linguistic compromise between the two languages, which will definitely lead to the dual role of Cape Verdean Kriolu and Portuguese for all Cape Verdeans worldwide. Our hope is that the Minister of Culture, Doctor Manuel Veiga, the leader of our dream, in conjunction with the Cape Verdean legislative branch, wisely will make it happen. More power to him and all those who are assisting him in that endeavor.

A Wonderful Platform of Linguistic Convergence

Agnelo A. Montrond

Brockton 01/21/07- It was an honor and a privilege to welcome all of the participants on the event of Dec. 21 evening, at the restaurant Sodade in Brockton, to celebrate with the students who have successfully completed the Capeverdean Language I course at Massasoit Community College.

It certainly was a fine opportunity for them to socialize, have a real taste of the Cape Verdean culture, typical gastronomy, music and more, in a very supportive, friendly and nurturing atmosphere. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the guest speakers: Jass Stewart, who was a candidate for Mayor of Brockton in the latest municipal elections, was our Keynote speaker; Nezi Brito, a board member of the Cape Verdean Creole Institute who is currently teaching Cape Verdean Creole at Harvard University; Manuel De Pina, Treasurer of the Cape Verdean Creole Institute, Doctor Lourenço Garcia who is the Assistant Principal at the Tolman Senior High School in Rhode Island; Jody Price, Teacher at the Adult Learning Center; Joia Sousa, Admissions Counselor at Massasoit; Jacqueline Jones, Coordinator of Minority Outreach and English Professor at Massasoit; Leonildo Landim, President of the Luso-African Club at Massasoit; Celestino De Pina, board member of the Cape Verdean Creole Institute; Vuca Pinheiro who was the Master of the Ceremonies.

On a special note, I would like to thank the administration of Massasoit Community College, namely Professor Cristina Ajemian, Modern Languages Department Chair, for being the pioneer of the wise initiative to offer Capeverdean Language Courses in this area. The diversity that Massasoit is supposed to embody is actually happening. The college is, in fact, providing a tremendous and extraordinary contribution that helps Capeverde and Capeverdeans in their endeavor of promoting and valuing their native tongue. It is initiative like this that empowers our linguistic and culturally diverse community, by breaking down cultural and linguistic barriers, hence facilitating and expediting the integration and adaptation of Capeverdeans and other minority groups in this host culture.

A thankful acknowledgement goes to Vuca Pinheiro’s band who, with a very high level of mastery, provided that unique, genuine and excellent Cape Verdean musical background to the audience. Also, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Pedro Silva (Piduca), brother of the deceased Ildo De Souza Silva Lobo, one of the most renowned singer of Mornas and Koladeras, who nurtures a passion for everything that substantiates the authentic spirit of Cape Verdean music. The multi-faceted talented man, Piduca, again chanted and enchanted the audience with a voice resembling very close to that of his deceased brother, especially when he echoed the lyrics of the famous song “nha fidju matxu”. Piduca demonstrated that he did not become a singer of his caliber by chance. However, we need to collectively urge Piduca to continue the wonderful work that his deceased brother has initiated for he is as much as a talented singer of traditional mornas and koladeras.

I would like to extend my recognition to all the participants on the event, for their continued support and cooperation in making the event a great success.

To all the students who have enrolled in this course I would like to express my appreciation and make it clear that it is people like them that will make a positive difference in our community. They have made a very wise and exemplary decision to commence the learning and development of the Capeverdean language. Such initiative is very meaningful for the Capeverdean Community in the United States to whom it is certainly perceived with a sense of joint-venture: Cape Verdeans are learning English as another language; some Americans are learning Cape Verdean Creole as another language. Isn’t that a wonderful platform of linguistic convergence that enables members of the community to stand in the intersection of the efforts in breaking the communication barrier, foster understanding, tolerance and respect for individual differences. It makes me believe that gone is the era of English only. Today’s America is a common space, which is a kind of a mosaic of a variety of cultures and languages. Education in other languages and cultures is a key factor that will unable Greater Brockton Citizens to effectively better share this same common space.

Leadership food for thought: A Challenge to our Leaders

Agnelo A. Montrond

I have been enjoying teaching Cape Verdean Language Arts at Massasoit Community College since the summer of the year 2000. Hundreds of students have shown interest in learning Cape Verdean Creole. For different reasons, area residents and others from all walks of life including dentists, medical doctors, lawyers, elementary and high school teachers and administrators, businesspeople and others who interact with Cape Verdeans either socially or professionally, have enrolled in this 3-credit course.

All those people want to learn the foundation of the Cape Verdean Language, history, and culture to get acquainted with their fundamentals to effectively and successfully deal with Cape Verdeans. Some of the course participants have stated that, after they have completed the course, they felt they were better prepared to effectively relate to Cape Verdeans residing in the Greater Brockton Area.

Brockton is really the 11th island of the archipelago of Cape Verde, as was wisely stated by the Cape Verdean prime-minister, José Maria Neves, in a recent visit to the United States. Interested “Champions” now have the opportunity to initiate the development of learning the language spoken by one of Brockton fastest growing minority groups. The “Cape Verdean-Champions” are hardworking people who are growing not only demographically, but also economically and intellectually. The number of businesses owned and operated by “Cape Verdean-Champions” has skyrocketed lately. “Cape Verdean-Champions” are helping to boost the economy in Brockton. Do you know how many “Cape Verdean – Champions” businesses are out there only on Main Street in Brockton? I am sure that if you find out, you will be surprisingly impressed. When it comes to homeownership “Cape Verdean-Champions” are a role model in the area: as soon as they buy a house they start making improvement to it in an effort to make it look nice both in the interior and in the exterior. That alone, is a tremendous contribution they have been doing to help beautify the city of Brockton.

Also, many intellectuals, scholars, educators, and highly qualified professionals have contributed to make this nation what it is today. As it was well said, Cape Verde richness is not gold, nor it is diamond, but it is its human resources. In an effort to avoid omissions, I will not mention names of those who have outperformed, surpassed, or excelled in several areas of knowledge, know how, or expertise in this country. We have sufficient reasons to be proud to be Cape Verdeans anywhere we may be, even though some of the US media have often inappropriately portrayed a negative image of what we are not about.
It should not go without saying that many Cape Verdeans have enlisted in the US army. Some have participated in several wars defending the country. Many have served and are still serving in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Several have lost their lives in the line of duty to defend our national interests.
For all these reasons we should congratulate our protagonists and meanwhile recognize that it is possible for Capeverdeans to do more and better both at national and local levels. At a local level, especially in Brockton, there is an urgent need to create a tactical and strategic coalition involving well respected and credited representatives of all sectors of the community capable of defending the Cape Verdeans’ interest and influencing the local decision makers with regards to social, economical, educational and political matters. This is a challenge that I would like to direct to our leaders.

1) komu ka ta uzadu c na Kriolu é lójiku ki ch tanbe ka debi uzadu;

10. Alguns létras ki ka ta figura na alfabétu ALUPEC sima c, h, q, w, y podi ser uzadu na skrita di Kriolu Kabuverdianu pa abreviason di unidadis uzadu na sistéma internasional di mididas y ses derivadus, sima cm (sentímitru) , hm (ekitómitru), kw (kilouóti), etc.
